The policy of the Society is one of deliberately seeking to offer opportunities for active Vincentian service and membership to Catholic lay persons. It is the hope of every Vincentian, if he responds to grace, that 'in giving of their possessions to the poor with all their heart, they will finally give themselves'… In the United States several types of membership exist: active membership; associate membership; and contributing membership. Associate member are those who accept the Society's basic principles but do not participate fully the life of the Conference or Council which has enrolled them. Contributing member is the designation applicable to one who regularly or in a substantial way provides financial support but who does not engage directly in the work of the Society.
