Frequently Asked Questions

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Is the Society of St. Vincent de Paul an organization within the Catholic Church?
The Society is an independent organization. It is an incorporated international Catholic lay organization with its own Rule, set of by-laws and procedures. While the Society can only operate in a diocese with the Bishop’s permission, it is not an organization of the Church. The Society of Altoona-Johnstown is greatly appreciative of the support given to us by past Bishop James Hogan and present Bishop Joseph Adamec.

Do you have to be Catholic to join the Society?
No. The Society is organized under a Diocesan Council, District Councils and parish based Conferences. The Society also operates what are called Special Works, food kitchens, food pantries, emergency financial aid programs and thrift stores. All those wishing to serve the needy can be a part of a Conference or an SVDP volunteer at any of our special works.

What type of assistance does the Society offer to the needy?
The Society provides a variety of assistance to those in need. Food, shelter, emergency financial aid with rent, utilities, medical bills, travel expenses and other basic necessities can be provided.
NO ACT OF CHARITY IS FOREIGN TO THE SOCIETY.

Do you have to be Catholic to receive assistance?
No. The Society offers assistance regardless of race, creed, color, gender, lifestyle or national origin

How can someone receive assistance?
Anyone in need can contact the Society through a parish Conference or an SVDP Special Works. Each person is given consideration and can be offered assistance or can be referred to another group or agency that may better serve the request made.
The Society cannot provide everything to everybody but it does all that it can to fulfill any legitimate need. Within the Society there are Special Works that must abide by some official guidelines and procedures as prescribed by government agencies.

How can I help the Society in its Mission to serve the poor?
There are many ways to assist the Society in its Mission including:

Join a St. Vincent de Paul Conference if one exists in your parish.
Help start a Conference in your parish if it does not already have one established
Volunteer your time at a St. Vincent de Paul food kitchen, pantry or thrift store
Make a cash donation
Hold a food drive, clothing drive or fundraiser for the Society
Pray for the Society, its members and those it serves
